optimism

Standard

slice button this marchArctic blasts blow frosty,

but the sun peeks through,

sweet patches of brownish green,

grow larger, stronger,

saying, “we need to breathe,

we are weighted down by

brown sugar frozen ice crystals,”

no longer stunning, no longer glorious but,

weary and ugly from their

lengthy visit to Chicago,

sweet patches of green and the hearty

crocus are arriving soon,

sun,

we know you will win the contest,

soon….

PS  I think I wrote this too soon…jinx, another dumping this weekend…bye, bye sweet patches and last night!

Looking across our yards one patch is visible. Yes, our Christmas lights are up still.

  1. Can’t wait for those sweet patches of green! You were too kind to describe the worn out brown yuk as crystals of brown sugar. 🙂 Bring on the sunshine. Loved your poem today!

  2. I think we all have had it with this winter! So looking forward to warmth of the sun and a lot of green! Beautifully said in your poem!

  3. Love that you titled this optimism, one of our 6th grade words of the week. I’ll share it with my students today. We had a bit of sunshine yesterday. Best mood lifter ever! I celebrate every time it peeks out.

  4. Spring can’t come soon enough – thank you for the reminder that it will prevail and come soon. It’s just weeks away (yet the snow is as high as my fence).

  5. Just think, when the snow melts and nourishes the earth, the grass will turn green, the flowers will bloom and warm weather will bring us much joy. Great poem!

  6. This is fantastic! “sun, we know you will win the contest, soon….” makes me long for the spring thaw…I saw glimpse of it last week, but more snow forecasted tomorrow…ugh! Your poem makes me hopeful for Spring.

  7. Yes; this winter can go. Now. So, Friday at my house it is supposed to be over 50 degrees. I’ve heard though the weekend will be back to the frozen temps. Your descriptions were fabulous — the brown patches most assuredly want to breathe :).
